This is an article regarding the Ujitawara “Asahi” Matcha from the Lupicia USA store in Valley Fair at San Jose, CA. I cannot guarantee that my experience will be the same with yours if you purchase the same product online. I am not sure about the shipping procedures, but I am assuming the storage parameters vary; so heads up for you all.
Aroma
- This matcha has a mild aroma, similar to that of the Kiri no Mori from Ocha. It is a nice, light, veggie smell.
Appearance (Powder at Purchase)
- The matcha powder was fine with not very many clumps. Did not require sifting to get excellent results.
Taste
- When sipped, you can feel the light body of the matcha. It saturates your tongue with an apparent body, but not too heavy, and definitely not watery.
- You can also taste some sweetness in the matcha when initially sipped
- It has a nice roll-off where you can have the body moving a light veggie taste, mixed with some sweetness
Brewing Parameters Used
- Water amount: 4 oz
- Tea amount: 1/3 tsp (around 1.25 spoonfuls using a matcha spoon)
(How it should look when froth is finished… not the actual matcha discussed)
Conclusion
I believe this is a great matcha. It is not priced too bad, and tastes great! As noted above, it’s a light matcha that has a nice mixture of the green flavor and sweetness. It rolls off smoothly, not too light like water, but not heavy as if you’re drinking a koicha. Overall, I was pleased with the matcha. If you like the heavier, more “greener” matchas, this is probably something you’re not looking for. But for a balanced flavor, I recommend trying this tea out.
My recommendation: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
